The Cure es una banda inglesa que comenzó su carrera a finales de los años 70 con la edición del LP Three Imaginary Boys, en un momento musical conocido como Post-Punk.

El estilo dark característico de su cantante Robert Smith, frecuentemente vestido con ropa negra y mostrando un rostro pálido y un lápiz de labios borroneado en la boca, sumado a las frecuentes letras introspectivas y tenebrosas han hecho que a la banda se la asocie generalmente con el rock gótico o dark. Smith rechaza esta categorización y se niega a enmarcar a la banda dentro de un único género. Además, su música mezcla un sonido gótico y oscuro con melodías pop y ciertos toques de electrónica.

The Cure ha logrado vender, desde el año de su formación (1976) alrededor de 50 millones de discos en todo el mundo.

Historia

Inicialmente recibieron diversas denominaciones: "Easy Cure", "The Crawlwy Goat Band" y "The Obelisk". La primera formación de la banda constaba de tres integrantes, estos eran: Robert Smith (guitarrista, vocalista y compositor), Michael Dempsey (bajista) y Lol Tolhurst (batería). En los comienzos de su carrera musical alcanzaron altas cotas de popularidad en Inglaterra con su single "A Forest", perteneciente a su segundo trabajo Seventeen Seconds de 1980 y en EE.UU. con "Boys Don't Cry", perteneciente a su primer LP (edición americana) Boys Don't Cry (1980). El nihilismo musical que caracteriza sus primeros discos y una estética rupturista ideada por su líder, Robert Smith, impulsó a la banda al éxito: primero en el Reino Unido y luego a otros países.


Robert SmithTras el suicidio de Ian Curtis en 1979 (vocalista de Joy Division) el movimiento musical conocido en Inglaterra como "siniestro" convirtió a The Cure en su abanderado. A lo largo de los 80 desarrollaron un estilo propio dentro de la corriente del post punk, siendo considerados un grupo del culto en la primera mitad de los años 80, pero en los 90 exploraron nuevas fórmulas musicales alejadas del sonido triste que les caracterizaba. Su púnto álgido en la consecución de un sonido oscuro fue su álbum Pornography de 1982. Después de su publicación el grupo quedó inactivo por un periodo de casi dos años por problemas internos y crisis mentales de algunos de sus miembros. Tras este periodo de separación, durante el cual Robert Smith y Lol Tolthurst publicaron un LP con un componente claramente electrónico, el disco se tituló Japanese Whispers. Cuando la banda decició reunirse de nuevo, el grupo volvió a grabar en estudio nuevo material compuesto por Robert Smith, en este caso se trató del LP The Top (1984). En estos momentos, ya eran reconocidos por la crítica musical y al publicar su álbum The Head On The Door en 1985 volvieron a recuperar el reconocimiento de sus adeptos con singles como "A Night LikeThis", "In Between Days" o "Close To Me".

Tras haber obtenido un relativo éxito con su LP Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me en 1987, alcanzaron sus mayores cotas de popularidad con dos álbumes: Disintegration (1989) y Wish (1992), dando lugar con este último al número 1 en los EE.UU. En 2004 lanzaron su álbum homónimo, dando pie a una gira mundial. En 2005 Roger O'Donnell y Perry Bamonte abandonaron el grupo justo antes del inicio de la gira que debería llevarles por Europa a presentar el citado trabajo.
